ALERT!!! Drought Conditions exist in our region.

Trees and Shrubs are dieing all over town. Please conserve water by following city guidelines and using soaker hoses and or slow drip irrigation on all trees and shrubs. Lawn irrigation is designed to adequately water sod grasses not for tree and shrub use.

TIPS:
-Never fertilize in drought conditions
-Water sod a minimum of one inch per week (St. Augustine)
-If plant is found "crunchy" to the touch, deleaf immediately for best results, soak and useSuperthrive to help bring it back
-Water deeply to leach soil of salty buildup we have in this region
-Over watering has similar appearance of under watering
-Wetting foliage is a bad idea.
-The roots are where water is needed. Burn will occur
-Never water blooms.

Greetings!

Spring is trying to show up. Lately it seems that there is still a cold front or two every week. Certain plants keep coming in and out of the greenhouse as temperature dictates this repetitive trek on wagons. On the other hand, there have been some beautiful, warm days that smiled brightly on us. My children have already jumped into the pool twice this Spring. Not by my suggestion I might add. It's still way too cool for me. I might consider that move in May!

Plants and supplies are in and spring color is abundant at Heirloom Gardens. We have lots of new plants like the Yellow Knock-Out Rose and the new White Out Rose. We are proud to be the first garden center in the area to bring these introductions to you. Please read �Introducing��to see what other plants are featured this quarter.

There is so much to talk about; you just have to trust me. Come in and check it all out.

Weed Identification and Management

Weed identification and control probably are the most asked about topic in the green industry.

While the Internet has opened up a world of information that makes weed identification a little less intimidating, it has not made it foolproof. Yes, there are many photos and references and advice at our fingertips, but some of these are posted by less-than reliable sources. The best bet is to stick with expert sources such as those provided by university extension services or by those who manufacture or supply weed control products. Heirloom Gardens offers both Texas Certified and Master Certified Nursery Professionals to answer your questions on weed identifications and control.

The most difficult time to identify weeds is, as luck would have it, also the best time to treat them post emergently. What makes it so difficult is that you have little to no distinguishable characteristics. It is important to identify them quickly, as you want any potential chemical treatment to be its most potential chemical treatment to be is most effective. On the flipside, you don�t want to I.D. the weed incorrectly and make an unneeded chemical application. The cost is too high for mistakes.

Please find following a generalized list of products to make gardening a bit easier for you and allow you more time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

After weeding and cleaning your beds, always use �Dimension.�

This is an excellent broad leaf killing product. Do not spray on windy days and keep off of your desirable foliage. This is an Heirloom Favorite with superior results even during cool weather and controls over 80 different weeds.

�Over the Top� is a new systemic herbicide that controls annual and perennial grasses in and around ornamentals, evergreens, trees, shrubs and groundcovers. This product kills soon after application roots and all. It controls grasses in and around azaleas, photinam roses and others� plus listed, but not limited to broadleaf shrubs, broadleaf trees, groundcovers, herbaceous plants and needled evergreens.

�Killzall� is our brand of �Roundup.� We offer a super concentrate formulation of 41% Glyphosate. It has a double surfactant formulation where it dries on plant fast and starts working quickly. This product will kill and or defoliate all plants it comes in contact with. It is a non-selective herbicide.

�Bermuda Grass Weeder� is for use in Bermuda Grass Lawns. It kills all grassy weeds and even some broadleaf varieties. The most common use here is for St Augustine creeping in on your Bermuda lawn.

�Perma Kill Total Vegetation Killer� is a non-selective control for total vegetation killing and prevents plant growth for up to one year in driveways, cracks, patios, paths parking areas, along fences, around buildings and graveled pathways. One quart makes five gallon of solution and covers 100 sq. ft.

�2,4-D Amine No. 4� is a broadleaf week killer for use in warmer temperatures. Weed Free Zone when cooler. Also kills wild onion and garlic in lawns. These are the little white flowers in spring that most of our children have picked and brought into mommy and grandma.

�High Yield Grass Killer� is a post emergent herbicide that can be sprayed over desirable plants listed to control annual and perennial grasses. Can be used on vegetables, gardens trees, shrubs, ornamentals and groundcovers. Stops growth of weeds within two days.Usually takes 2 30-day applications. Use when warm. Kills weedy Bermuda in most flowerbeds. Pulling Bermuda is typically the wrong choice. This is an Heirloom favorite!

�Image� is a product used to control nut sedge and other listed weeds in established flower and shrub beds. It can be sprayed over the top of listed flowers and shrubs without injury to desirable plants. Pulling nutgrass tends to make the problem worse. This too is an Heirloom favorite.

Always consult the label before deciding to use chemical preventions. Please feel free to come in and get proper identification of the weed to be controlled and the suggested product to remedy the invasion.

Introducing�

Hot plants for hot times ahead

The Yellow Knock Out Rose-New addition to the Knock Out family. We are told it has the same characteristics of the famous Red Knock Out. Grows to 4-5 feet with a 3 feet spread. Flowers are Texas yellow fading to white. The big surprise� it has fragrance.

The White Out Rose-This plant is a clean white knock out representative. Similar growth habit to the knock outs along with the disease and insect resistance. Great Bloomers!

Bryan�s Favorite is the Dahlberg Daisy-This plant of the year winner isn�t new but has a newfound presence in the market for people who want low maintenance and high show. Come in and check them out. Yellow flowers on top of fine textured foliage. This is a low mounding plant to 10 inches by 10 inches. Drought tolerant and Full Sun.

Gazanias have proven to be the consumers� favorite. Available in bright colors. These plants have proven themselves to be permanent additions to the garden. Most of all ours never leave the landscape sometimes blooming the year around. They grow to 10 inches x 12 inches and love full sun and are disease and insect free.

Skinner�s Banana Shrub is a plant for shady gardens. It is a shrub growing to 8 feet unpruned. It has a very sweet banana fragrance with large white blooms similar to a magnolia. Prefers good drainage and shade to morning sun.

Aquaduct by Fertilome-This is a new product available in a hose end sprayer. It ensures quick penetration and reduces run off of irragation. It reduces water usage by up to 50%. In our water resource conscious world, this is the best avenue for us all to take up. Lets join the green movement. Come in and ask for details.

Copper Fungicide by Fertilome controls the black mold on crepe myrtles. We�ve all seen it at one time or another. The sooty/black mold caused by insect infestation can now be treated early with Fertilome Liquid Systemic Drench. It will protect from infestation all season long. The blackness never comes off it would seem and that is where the Copper Fungicide comes in. This has worked really well for us!

Pond in a Bucket is a very ingenious idea. It offers at $149.99, a complete fountain kit. It is a disappearing design that fits almost every location. Power supply is needed. Come in and check this out. Supply is limited.

Small Features Grow in Popularity�

Despite the confines of smaller homes and gardens, water garden designers across the nation said the homeowners want the impact of a big feature despite the smaller scale. The market for smaller ponds and self-contained features continues to grow.

The move toward smaller water features reflects a long time trend started in the 90�s. To date, maintence has been the biggest issue to limit installations. Currently, with simple management practices, nearly everyone can have a water feature. Nothing brings as much to a space as a water feature!

Years ago, many small spaces both indoor and out were not viewed as candidates for housing water features. New materials make this a more viable option. Vegetable Gardening in 2009

We've heard about all of the negatives when it comes to the current economic situation. High costs are passed down the proverbial ladder to the consumer. We have a tactic to counter act the high cost of produce...Grow your own! It is so very easy. Most people wind up giving more away that they eat. The benefits offered are health reasons, cost, taste and practical family experience. Organic tagged produce at your local market is in most cases two to three times the cost of conventionally grown produce. Organic grown produce do not have conventional fertilizers during the lifespan of the plant. It is certified to be chemical free at checkout. You can control the same factors to certify your own "organic" produce. This means to the consumer where positive health issues or preservatives and other chemicals are not to enter our bodies. The cost for produce production is very nominal. Try raising your produce in pots or raised beds to make maintenance easy. Once the initial cost of soils is complete, the rest is but a "pense" These tiny expenses will yield big returns. A single squash, tomato or pepper plant will return 100X its base. It's a shame Wall Street can't offer the same! A few Christmas seasons back, my family received an awesome family CD of "bluegrass" from Cains in College Station. One of the most awesome songs we came across was Homegrown Tomatoes". It spoke of the sweetness, color, size and retro nostalgia of picking fresh off the vine produce. Folks, there is nothing like it. My own kids will not eat store bought tomatoes but love them sliced with a bit of salt and pepper off the bush. The taste difference is exceptional. We'll offer taste testing in our spring seminars. Be sure to sign up online soon.

And lastly, turn gardening into a fun family adventure. Chase butterflies and catch ladybugs. Watch

the plants grow from a small 2" being into a 5' mammoth. The lessons a small garden gives to children is in itself a true blessing. It's nice to see when a young person comes in and is so excited about his

or her very own vegetable plant. In closing, whatever your reasons to try gardening... its never too late to start. The plants grow so very fast. Be sure to come in and let us set you and your family up on a great springtime adventure.

Just a little reminder concerning what is occuring at Heirloom Gardens during the month of November. We are having another evening to shop on November 13, 2008 from 6 to 8 pm. Hey Ya'll,

Greetings on this hot and dry summer day. Vacations and family outings are about to come to a close. The school bells in Bryan/College Station are about to ring. You are probably wondering what should I do with all my free time. We find it somewhat funny that on day one of school, we see an increase in customer visits to Heirloom Gardens. It is almost as though the children get dropped off and mom faces a day with the no endless responsibility to take care of until late afternoon.

With summer about to wound down and Fall just around the corner the staff of Heirloom Gardens can't wait until your next visit to share with you the seasons' glorious gusto of plant materials and other fine quality novelties. We have even scheduled a Christmas open house on October 18. (See our story in this newsletter.) We will actually host a tree lighting ceremony during this year's holiday season. Also, remember to speak with are interior design/fresh floral staff about decorating your home for the holiday season.

We can't wait to see you all again here at the garden center. Come in soon to see the new holiday items. Were always trying to make your visit a delightful experience. Daisy Dollar Reminder

The month of August is coming to an end. The daisy dollar program is a wonderful program that allows our customers the benefit of purchasing items at 50% off the retail price. Gather up all your daisy dollars before it is too late. The program expires on August 31, 2009. However, do not throw away your unused daisy dollars. You can use them next August.

Water Conservation Tips

Many of our customers ask us all the time, "How can we help the environment and conserve resources." In a few easy steps, you can conserve valued resources. At Heirloom Gardens we make strong effort to save energy and resources whenever possible.

Here are a few steps we try to use at your local garden center:

1. Soil Analysis-This will determine moisture-holding capacity.

2. Appropriate plant selection-Grouping similar water need plants with those of same demand requirements.

3. Use of mulches correctly-Depth is directly related to moisture retention and temperature in plant root area.

4. Plant Maintenance-Catch a problem sooner. Be proactive in the care of your lawn and garden.

It is amazing to the staff at Heirloom Gardens that with such little effort we can conserve much of our natural resources. Take the time and stop by the garden center to receive helpful information related to water conservation. You too can make a difference in going green!

Knock Out Roses

A Great Selection for B/CS

If you need a flowering plant that will respond to the tremendous heat associated with Bryan/College Station, Texas. We have the perfect solution for you. Knock Out Roses are the proven winner in this area. These lovely, profuse bloomers can truly survive those high temperatures of the summer months. They do not need constant maintenance and they provide the gardener with lovely flowers of robust colors. These flowers are often used for hedges, privacy screens, and even fill in those dreadful holes in your landscape design.

Another important quality of this plant is that we have several different varieties. The Red Knock-out Rose is a carefree rose with a light, spicy fragrance quality. It is also has an excellent disease resistant quality. The colorful red blossoms develop during the summer months and then in the fall the remaining flowers give way to beautiful purple foliage. These roses are self-cleans eliminating endless hours of deadheading. The Double-Knock-Our Roses have the same alluring qualities but the blooms are much larger and produce more petals.

Did you know that the Knock-Out Roses also come with pink blossoms? The Blushing Knock-Out Rose have the same characteristics as the standard Knock-Out however, the flowers are a light pink with lovely yellow centers. This plant would be an excellent change of pace for your gardens areas

As you can see, this variety of plant might be that something different that you are looking for in your landscape design. Stop by Heirloom Gardens and allow our nursery staff to show you these beautiful plants.

Water Gardening Issues for Summer

Everything in your pond is in full splendor. Fish and all those aquatic plants are doing wonderfully. Then one morning algae is growing at an alarming rate and you do not know what to do. We have a staff of pond maintenance specialist eagerly await your phone calls. But before you do, there are several simple task that you can do to maintain the beauty of your pond. We suggest keeping your strainer and/or filter clean. Keep adding fresh water to your pond because the hotter weather will cause water to evaporate. Monitor all pond life carefully for parasites and disease. If you begin to experience issue with your water garden, contact our staff of pond specialist to obtain proper diagnoses.

Helpful Hints for your Outdoor Water Garden

1. Continue to fertilize through the entire month of August.

2. Feed fish only twice a day. Feeding amount should be no more than they can eat in 5 minutes.

3. Quarantine all new plants and fish for 14 days before adding them to your pond.

4. Run pump continuously.

5. Do not feed your fish if the water temperature is over 85 degrees. Adding cool water will assist you with bringing the temperature down.

As long as I can remember, I've always dabbled with metal fabrication of one type or another. My life at a metal artisan began in 1995 when I was introduced to Master Bladesmith, Steve Rollert.

Shortly afterwards, I became a student of Steve's learning the art of hand forged knives and swords. My serious hobby-level interest in bladesmithing led me to pursue the broader aspects of working hot metal, and in 1999 the opportunity to relocate to the United Kingdom presented it.

I worked and trained as a blacksmith for four years and hat the opportunity to work on properties such as The Duke of Wellington's Estate (Stratfield Saye), Greys Court, Medmenham Abbey, Fletcher House Museum and others.

As a sculptor, I think the most significant event/meeting took place in 2001 when I was invited to travel with members of the British Artists Blacksmiths Association to a small town in Catalonia called Arlsetec for a three-day forge-in.

While on the plane, I was introduced to Ross Newman. Ross was a sculptor who worked in steel and though she was not limited to one style, use of melted wire, built up to produce faces and dancing figures was without a doubt, in my opinion, the most impressive and unique thing think I'd ever seen. It would be two years before I was able to pursue my work in steel sculpture, but pursue I did.

As a sculptor, I describe myself as self-taught. I enjoy working with found materials, but can also work from scratch. It is not uncommon for me to incorporate hand-forged elements in my sculpture or draw from my background in bladesmithing.

Periodically, I still do commissions related to bladesmithing or wrought iron work but by far the greater demand has been for my artwork. Your interest in my artwork is by far the greater demand has seen for my artwork. Your interest in my artwork is greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking a look.

Community Service Activities

During the first week of June, Heirloom Gardens held a Container Garden Clinic to benefit Habitat Builder Blitz. Members of the

A & M Garden Club participated in this wonderful event held at Heirloom Gardens. The project provided a rich-learning environment for all who participated.
